Tips to Winterize Your Electric Bike
and Keep Your Battery Happy

Tip #1: CLEAN YOUR E-BIKE & LUBE YOUR CHAIN BEFORE STORAGE
It’s important to regularly clean your electric bike but most especially before storing it for the winter. Over time salt & water residue can cause corrosion on metal parts. Every time you wash your chain or put your e-bike away for the season, you should put a bit of bicycle-specific chain lube on your entire chain. Do not use other lubricants like WD-40 as they tend to attract grit while bicycle specific lube repels grit.

Tip #2:  STORE YOUR BATTERY PARTIALLY CHARGED – BUT NOT TOO LOW!
Did you know you should always store your battery partially charged? Aim for the battery to have about 40-to-70 percent of its full capacity. But don’t ever store a lithium-ion battery empty since this may cause irreparable cell damage. It’s also important to check your battery about once every couple of months during non use and charge for a short while if it has depleted any during that time.

Tip #3:  DON’T STORE OR CHARGE YOUR BATTERY IN FREEZING TEMPS
During the winter months when temperatures can go below zero, it is advised to store your electric bike inside in a cool dry location like a garage or basement. If that is not possible, it is best to remove the battery and store it indoors. E-Bikes can operate in below-freezing temperatures, but you should warm up your battery before plugging it in to charge. Cold batteries do not charge efficiently and may not reach full capacity. Simply bring your cold battery indoors and allow it to slowly warm to room temperature, then charge it.

Tip #4:  DON’T OVERCHARGE YOUR ELECTRIC BIKE BATTERY
Don’t leave your electric bike battery on the charger for long periods of time — think several days or more. When you do, you can create a cycle where the charger tries to top off the battery and has minor discharges. This topping off continues and creates a series of poor charging cycles which can damage the battery.

Kul Fact: Cyclists are cool!

A 2014 psychological study found that cyclists have a unique blend of intelligent generosity and the “cool” factor.
